MAINTENANCE OF GRAVEL AND STONE ROADS, ESPECIALLY SURFACE TREATMENTS

BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS ARE GIVEN OF THREE METHODS IN COMMON USE FOR PROVIDING DUSTLESS SURFACES FOR GRAVEL AND STONE ROADS. THE "SKIN" METHOD OF SURFACE TREATING WITH TAR IS NOT INTENDED FOR PERMANENCY. TO CARRY IT THROUGH THE WINTER AND SPRING A LATE SEASON TREATMENT OF HEAVY ASPHALTIC OIL AND A COARSE COVER COAT IS SOMETIMES USED. THE "MULCH" METHOD IS A SURFACE MIX TREATMENT RESULTING IN A MAT SURFACE. THE "RETREAD" METHOD IS A SURFACE MIX TREATMENT WITH COARSE STONE OR GRAVEL TO PRODUCE A WEARING SURFACE SEVERAL INCHES THICK.
