DISCUSSION OF REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON MAINTENANCE

THE REPORT ON DUST PALLIATIVES ON GRAVEL AND MACADAM ROADS IS DISCUSSED. EXPERIENCE IN OHIO PROVIDED A TABLE OF THE AMOUNTS OF MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL, AND THE AMOUNT DEPENDS ON THE FOLLOWING FACTORS: (1) THE KIND OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL, (2) THE CHARACTER OF THE SURFACE, AND (3) THE WEATHER CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH IT IS APPLIED. IT IS FELT THAT THE REPORT ON CRACK FILLERS ON CONCRETE PAVEMENT SHOWS A LACK OF UNIFORMITY IN PRACTICE. IT IS FELT THAT THE COST OF SNOW REMOVAL ON HEAVY TRAFFIC ROUTES IS LESS THAN THE AMOUNT REQUIRED FOR EXTRA MAINTENANCE COST IF THE SNOW IS NOT REMOVED. IT IS FELT THAT THE JOINT BOARD ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS HAS ACCOMPLISHED A GREAT WORK IN COMING TO A DECISION ON STANDARD WARNING AND DIRECTION SIGNS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A STUDY SHOULD BE MADE OF COST ACCOUNTING SYSTEMS IN USE IN VARIOUS STATES.
