EXTENDING THE SERVICE LIFE OF ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

THE USE OF AN ASPHALT REJUVENATING AGENT, RECLAMITE, AS A CONSTRUCTION SEAL IS DISCUSSED. THE HEATER-REMIX OVERLAY APPROACH ON EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IS ALSO DESCRIBED. THE ASPHALT REJUVENATOR RECLAMITE IS AN EMUSLION OF SELECTED PETROLEUM RESINS AND OILS. THREE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF ASPHALT- CONCRETE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE THAT SHORTEN THE EXPECTED LIFE OF THE FACILITY ARE: (1) THE HOT PLANT OPERATION WHERE ASPHALT IS EXPOSED TO HEAT, (2) AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND HAUL DISTANCES SUCH THAT THE HOT-MIX COOLS TO A DEGREE THAT PROPER COMPACTION CANNOT BE OBTAINED, THEREBY EXPOSING THE PAVEMENT TO INTRUSION OF AIR AND WATER, AND (3) CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ASPHALT. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF USING THE REJUVENATING AGENT AS A CONSTRUCTION SEAL TO TEND TO CORRECT THESE PROBLEMS BY: (1) RESTORING THE FRACTIONS OF THE ASPHALT THAT ARE LOST DURING THE MIXING CYCLE AT THE HOT PLANT, (2) SEALING THE SURFACE AGAINST INTRUSION OF AIR AND WATER, AND (3) CHANGING THE CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ASPHALT BY IMPROVING ITS DURABILITY CHARACTERISTICS. THE PROCEDURE FOR OVERLAYING EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IS BECOMING POPULAR. THIS PROCESS CONSISTS OF HEATING THE EXISTING PAVEMENT, SCARIFYING, SPLITTING THE REJUVENATING AGENT CONCENTRATE, AND THEN OVERLAYING THE ASPHALT MIX. THIS PROCESS ASSURES BOND, REJUVENATES THE OLD SCARIFIED PAVEMENT AND ELIMINATES THE SURFACE CRACKS IN THE EXISTING SURFACING.
