COMPARITIVE TESTS ON MODEL VEE SNOW PLOUGHS
TESTS WERE MADE TO DEVELOP A VEE SNOW PLOW BLADE WITH A BETTER CASTING PERFORMANCE THAN THOSE IN USE. SOME THEORECTICAL WORK WAS DONE TO ESTABLISH EFFICIENCY CRITERIA, AND TWO NEW EFFICIENCIES ARE DEFINED: THE OVERALL EFFICIENCY, N-O, WHICH IS A MEASURE OF THE PERCENTAGE OF WORK DONE BY THE PLOW WHICH IS CONVERTED INTO USEFUL LATERAL ENERGY OF THE PLOWED MATERIALS, AND THE CLEARING EFFICIENCY, N-A, WHICH MEASURES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BLADE IN REMOVING PLOWED MATERIAL FROM ITS PATH. THE TEST RESULTS SHOW THAT SOME IMPROVEMENT IN EFFICIENCY CAN BE OBTAINED BY CHANGING THE BLADE FORMS CURRENTLY USED ON COMMERCIAL SNOW PLOWS. THESE CHANGES CAUSE AN INCREASE IN MEAN OVERALL EFFICIENCY FROM 7.0 TO 9.7 PERCENT. THE BEST SHAPE OF PLOW BLADE USES ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF THE ENERGY TO OVERCOME FRICTION AND TO BREAK UP THE PLOWED MATERIALS. IT APPEARS THAT FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS ARE NOT LIKELY TO RESULTS FROM CHANGES IN THE BLADE SHAPE. SOME CHANGES IN BLADE SHAPE WERE MADE TO REDUCE OVERSPILL AND TO ENABLE THE BLADE TO OPERATE IN DEEPER SNOW. IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY FOLLOW THAT THE PERCENTAGE IMPROVEMENT RECORDED IN THE MODEL TESTS WILL ALSO OCCUR ON THE FULL SCALE. HOWEVER, IT IS LIKELY THAT THE BLADE WHICH REGISTERED THE BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE ON THE MODEL SCALE WOULD ALSO GIVE THE BEST FULL-SCALE PERFORMANCE AND THE REPORT GIVES DETAILS OF A BLADE, WHICH IS RECOMMENDED FOR FULL-SCALE TRIALS. /AUTHOR/
