EFFECT OF THAWING - SALTS AND STUDDED TIRES ON BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACINGS (IN GERMAN)

AS A SUPPLEMENT TO A ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN "BITUMEN", NOV 6, 1967 ON THE SUBJECT, EXPERIENCES WITH WINTER DAMAGE IN SWITZERLAND ARE REPORTED. THE IMPORTANCE OF A DENSE MIX COMPOSITION AND GOOD COMPACTION IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS IS EMPHASIZED. THROUGH CONSTANT OBSERVATION OF THE CONDITION OF THE SOIL, ATTEMPTS ARE MADE TO SPREAD THE SALT JUST BEFORE ICING OCCURS, THUS REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF SALT NECESSARY. STUDDED TIRES MUST ONLY BE USED ON VEHICLES UP TO 3.5 TONS TOTAL WEIGHT, AND THE USE MUST BE RESTRICTED TO CERTAIN TIMES OF THE YEAR. /RRL/
