GALVANIZED GUIDE RAIL PROGRAM

THE PROBLEMS AND COSTS ARE DESCRIBED FOR MAINTENANCE OF PAINTED GUIDE RAILS AND GALVANIZATION OF NEARLY 300 MILES OF RUSTED PAINTED GUIDE RAILING. A MICRO TEST GAGE WAS USED FOR VISUAL INSPECTION AND FOR DISMANTLING AND REERECTION, AIR AND ELECTRIC TOOLS WERE USED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PNEUMATIC TOOLS WERE SUBJECT TO TROUBLES AS THE WEATHER CHANGED, SO ELECTRICALLY OPERATED TOOLS ARE USED. THIS AGGRESSIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM HAS VIRTUALLY ELIMINATED GUIDE RAIL MAINTENANCE AND THE FOLLOWING IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN ADDED: (1) IMPROVED ALIGNMENT, (2) WOOD POSTS ALL PAINTED, (3) DAMAGED POSTS REPLACED, (4) SOME END RAMPING AND MUCH EXTENDING OF GUIDE RAIL RUNS, (5) STRENGTH IMPROVED BY DISCARDING BADLY RUSTED SECTION, AND (6) THE PATRON IS GIVEN A SHOULDER EDGE LINE WHICH IS CONSTANT IN COLOR AND TEXTURE.
