PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMMING

THE DEVELOPMENT IS DESCRIBED OF A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM AND REFINEMENT BY USE OF AUTOMATIC DATA PROCESSING. THE GENERAL CRITERIA USED IN ESTABLISHING THE SYSTEM WAS THE MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT WHICH, IF DAMAGED OR INOPERABLE, WOULD INTERFERE WITH ESSENTIAL OPERATION OF THE ACTIVITY, ENDANGER LIFE OR PROPERTY, INVOLVE HIGH COST OR LONG LEAD TIME FOR REPLACEMENT. A COMPLETE INVENTORY OF ALL EQUIPMENT WAS MADE. IT WAS SCREENED CAREFULLY AND ITEMS WHICH COULD NOT QUALIFY UNDER THE ESTABLISHED CRITERIA WERE ELIMINATED. THE EQUIPMENT WAS THEN CATEGORIZED BY LIKE ITEMS AND A SCOPE AND FREQUENCY OF MAINTENANCE FOR EACH WAS ESTABLISHED. A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE RECORD SYSTEM WAS SET UP TO SCHEDULE AND ACCUMULATE HISTORICAL DATA. THE SYSTEM WAS PROGRAMMED FOR AUTOMATIC DATA PROCESSING WHICH ACCOMPLISHED THE FOLLOWING' /1/ MANUAL SORTING WAS ELIMINATED, /2/ WORK WAS AUTOMATICALLY PROGRAMMED, /3/ BETTER CONTROL IS PERMITTED, /4/ PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE BACKLOG IS PINPOINTED, /5/ AREAS NEEDING ATTENTION ARE INDICATED, AND /6/ COST OF THE PROGRAM IS ACCUMULATED.
