How to Develop and Launch an Online Trip Planner
Since the late 1990s transit agencies have been replacing printed route maps and schedules with online trip planners. While they can be costly, these web based tools provide riders with the ability to search for best route suggestions by address, landmark, intersection and other useful names. Some also have partner agency data and can plan trips involving multiple transit providers, display the time when the next bus will arrive, or display alerts about service disruptions and detours. Riders can also get route-specific alerts via text message or email. To cut the costs of maintaining a trip planner, some agencies have switched from outside vendors to doing it all in-house.
