Development of a Soundness Evaluation System for Bridge Substructured

Serious accidents could occur and transportation could be disrupted due to scour. Water gages have been installed at piers at risk of scour by JR East, as well as clinometric type scour monitoring devices. If even slight pier inclination is detected, the device will alert the user. A bridge substructure soundness evaluation system is being developed by JR East's Disaster Prevention Research Laboratory to detect signs of pier scour and monitor soundness. The system can use inclination, as well as vibration, such as that from trains, to monitor. JR East has, to date, used a prototype vibration sensor to perform long-term field testing for the system. Test results formed the basis of required sensor specification determination. JR East also verified soundness evaluation system effectiveness for a system using microtremors and train vibration under flood conditions with actual measurement data as its basis.
