West from Denver

Interstate 70 connects Denver with popular mountain recreation areas to the West. The resulting traffic has led to severe congestion and the need for a long-term solution. After an 11-year planning process, the Colorado Department of Transportation recently issued a programmatic environmental impact statement. The planning process was long primarily because of funding limitations and the need to find context-sensitive solutions to preserve the scenic beauty of the corridor. The plan calls for adding tunnels and widening road segments to expand capacity, but it also incorporates a mass transit component. The exact form of the mass transit component remains undecided, but an advanced guideway systems or Maglev are both being considered. Financing these improvements will probably require user-based fee programs and private public partnerships.
