EXPERIMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTING

ACOUSTIC EMISSION TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED THROUGH THE LABORATORY CURIOSITY AND RESEARCH PHASES IN THE LAST FEW YEARS. IT SHOULD NOW BE CONSIDERED, ALONG WITH OTHER AVAILABLE TECHNIQUES AS A NORMAL MATERIALS TESTING TOOL. AN EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN FOR A LABORATORY IS DESCRIBED AND THOSE ASPECTS OF THE EXPERIMENT THAT WOULD MOST LIKELY LEAD TO DIFFICULTY FOR A PERSON ATTEMPTING SUCH A TEST FOR THE FIRST TIME ARE DISCUSSED. DESIGN PRECAUTIONS, PITFALLS, AND HOW TO AVOID THEM, SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR EQUIPMENT AND INSTRUMENTATION, AND GENERAL ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF ACOUSTIC EMISSION TEST METHODS ARE DISCUSSED. THE UNUSUAL ASPECTS OF THE ACOUSTIC EMISSION TEST HAVE BEEN EMPHASIZED IN THE DISCUSSION, WITH GREATEST EMPHASIS BEING PLACED ON THOSE MATTERS WHICH MOST OFTEN CAUSE ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTS TO FAIL OR TO RESULT IN THE GENERATION OF FALLACOIUS DATA. /AUTHOR/
