Field Instrumentation and Measured Response of the I-295 Cable-Stayed Bridge : Interim Report on Construction Measurements in Deck Segments
During the construction of the 1-295 cable-stayed bridge, an extensive array of mechanical strain gage points were installed in sections of the box girders, pylons, and piers. At each instrumented box girder section, five longitudinal gages were placed on the deck surface and three longitudinal gages were placed on the bottom flanges of the box girder. Instrumentation was concentrated on the cantilevered north span and the two adjacent side spans. Strain measurements were taken throughout the erection of the cantilever span. Measured strains are reported on in this study. The measurements revealed a complex strain pattern across the deck, reflecting the existence of shea lag in the box girder, but also the influence of multiple post-tensioning tendons across the deck.
