THE ROLE OF THEORY IN EDDY CURRENT TESTING

NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING IS GREATLY CONCERNED WITH THE ASSURANCE THAT TESTS DO WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH, AND WITH DETERMINATION OF THE RESPONSIBILITY AND THE LIABILITY OF THE ENGINEERS WHO INTERPRET THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS BASED UPON THEM. IN EDDY CURRENT TESTING, INFORMATION IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL EXPERIMENTAL TESTS MAY BE PROVIDED BY THE GREAT BULK OF THEORY THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED, PARTICULARLY IN THE PAST DECADE OR TWO. UNFORTUNATELY, MUCH OF THIS WORK IS VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN TO MOST ENGINEERS AND THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO REVIEW BRIEFLY WHAT HAS BEEN DONE AND TO SUGGEST SOURCES, OFTEN OBSCURE, FROM WHICH THE MORE DETAILED THEORETICAL INFORMATION MAY BE OBTAINED. THE PRINCIPAL PROBLEMS DISCUSSED ARE THE IMPEDANCE OF A COIL SURROUNDING A METAL ROD OR TUB AND THE IMPEDANCE OF A COIL ABOVE A PLANE METAL SURFACE, BUT OTHER PROBLEMS ARE ALSO CONSIDERED. /AUTHOR/
