UNEXPECTED CORROSION OF GALVANIZED CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS

GALVANIZED STEEL PIPES (CLASSES A AND B AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS AS NO. 128-1962) HAVE BEEN INSTALLED AS CULVERTS BY THE HIGHWAYS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, DURING THE PERIOD 1963 TO 1966 AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN THE STATE, INCLUDING THE GORGE ROAD, SITUATED TEN MILES FROM ADELAIDE. A CLOSE EXAMINATION OF SIX CULVERTS HAS SHOWN VARIOUS DEGREES AND TYPES OF CORROSION OF THE INVERT IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS AFTER INSTALLATION. THIS CORROSION IS CONTRARY TO EXPECTATIONS, AS THE CALCULATED SERVICE LIFE BASED ON THE METHOD DEVELOPED BY BEATON AND STRATFULL FOR SIMILAR CULVERTS, RANGED FROM 25 TO OVER 100 YEARS. RESULTS OF LABORATORY AND FIELD INVESTIGATIONS, A BRIEF SYNOPSIS ON THE PROTECTIVE ROLE AND INFLUENCES THAT CAN CAUSE CORROSION OF ZINC COATED MATERIALS ARE PRESENTED, TOGETHER WITH A POSSIBLE THEORETICAL EXPLANATION FOR THE REASON OF EARLY BREAKDOWN OF THE GALVANIZING. THE PAPER CONCLUDES WITH SOME DISCUSSION OF THE PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM. /AUTHOR/
