SOME EUROPEAN ROAD MARKING PRACTICES

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF A SERIES OF ARTICLES WHICH APPEARED IN TRAFFIC CONTROL AND ENGINEERING (ENGLAND), APRIL, 1968. WEST GERMANY HAS LEGAL PROVISIONS GOVERNING ROAD MARKINGS IN THE NATION WHICH INSURE A HIGH DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY. PAINT DAMAGE FROM STUDDED TIRES HAS BECOME A PROBLEM. PROVISIONS FOR MARKING PAINT THICKNESS, REFLECTORIZATION, AND PAVEMENT MARKINGS ARE DISCUSSED. ALMOST ALL MOTORWAYS HAVE CENTERLINES AND EDGE LINES ON BOTH SIDES. ABOUT 98 PERCENT OF TRUNK ROADS HAVE CENTER LINES. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 60 PERCENT OF SECONDARY ROADS AND 30 PERCENT OF LOCAL ROADS HAVE CENTERLINES. SWEDEN HAS RECENTLY ADOPTED ALL-WHITE MARKINGS WHICH CORRESPOND WITH THE DANISH SYSTEM. CENTERLINES ARE NOT USED WHEN SIGHT DISTANCES ARE RESTRICTED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. IT IS A LEGAL OFFENSE TO DRIVE TO THE LEFT OF A CONTINUOUS CENTERLINE UNLESS THERE IS A BROKEN LINE TO THE RIGHT OF IT. PAVEMENT MARKING SYSTEMS USED IN SWEDEN ARE REVIEWED. THE NETHERLANDS HAS A STATUTORY REQUIREMENT THAT ALL STATE HIGHWAYS MUST BE PROVIDED WITH INTERMITTENT AND CONTINUOUS LINES AND WITH TRIANGLES (USED TO GIVE WARNING OF A PRIORITY ROAD AHEAD). PAINT AND THERMOPLASTIC MARKINGS MUST MEET STATE SPECIFICATIONS. ITALY EMPLOYS CARRIAGEWAY MARKINGS CONSISTING OF LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE LINES AND OTHER SYMBOLS.
