DETECTION OF STRAIN BY COHERENT OPTICAL TECHNIQUES

RECENTLY DEVELOPED HOLOGRAPHIC AND COHERENT OPTICAL PROCESSING TECHNIQUES ARE UNDER STUDY FOR THEIR APPLICABILITY TO NONDESTRUCTIVE INSPECTION. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES WITH SPECIFIC EXAMPLES THE UTILITY OF HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY, OPTICAL CORRELATION AND DIFFRACTION FOR SURFACE MICROSTRAIN MEASUREMENT AND FLAW DETECTION. PRELIMINARY DATA SUGGEST THE EMERGENCY OF A NEW NONCONTACTING TOOL FAR MORE SENSITIVE THAN THOSE PRESENTLY IN USE. /AUTHOR/
