WHEN ARE WELD DEFECTS REJECTABLE?

THE WELDING PROCESS AND PROCEDURE JUDGMENT ARE DISCUSSED. IN THE CONSIDERATION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WELD DEFECTS, THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT WELDING PROCESSES AND WELDING PROCEDURE VARIABLES MUST BE RECOGNIZED. POROSITY REPRESENTS THE DEFECT MOST READILY DETECTED BY RADIOGRAPHIC INSPECTION. IT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF WELD REJECTION. DEFECTS ON THE SURFACE MAY BE MORE HARMFUL THAN DEFECTS WITHIN THE WELD DEPOSIT. UNDERCUT FORMS FREQUENTLY ALONGSIDE THE EDGE OF WELDS. WELDS WITH UNDERCUT ALONG THE EDGE OF THE WELD ARE SOMETIMES EXCESSIVELY GROUND TO REMOVE THE UNDERCUT. THIS MAY RESULT IN THE REDUCTION OF THE WALL THICKNESS CAUSING FAILURES. SIMILAR IN EFFECT TO UNDERCUT IS CONCAVITY IN THE ROOT OF WELDS AS MADE BY INERT-GAS TUNGSTEN-ARC WELDING. THE TENDENCY FOR CREVICE FORMATION IS DISCUSSED. WELDING STRESSES CAN ALSO CAUSE CRACKING IN ADJACENT METALS. WELDS WITHOUT APPARENT FLAWS MAY FAIL IN SERVICE. IN THE CONSIDERATION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WELD DEFECTS, THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT WELDING PROCESSES AND WELDING PROCEDURE VARIABLES ARE DISCUSSED. THE MAJOR WELDING PROCESSES TEND TO PRODUCE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEFECTS. A TRAINING PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED FOR WELDING AND INSPECTION PERSONNEL.
