SERVICE REQUIREMENTS AND FAULT INCIDENCE FOR PLASTICS IN TELECOMMUNICATION CABLES
GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS, MATERIALS ASPECTS, AND CASE HISTORIES RELATING TO THE USE OF PLASTICS FOR INSULATING AND PROTECTING TELEPHONE LINES ARE DISCUSSED. POLYETHYLENE SHEATHING IN COMBINATION WITH ALUMINUM FOIL WILL PROBABLY SUPERSEDE LEAD SHEATHING AFTER FURTHER DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIENCE IN REDUCING PERMEABILITY AND DEGRADATION. THE LOW WEIGHT AND COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF PE SHEATHS HAVE MADE POSSIBLE BIG SAVINGS IN INSTALLATION COSTS. /MP/
