MAIN PROPULSION SHAFTING ECCENTRICITY CONSIDERATIONS

The criteria used to establish eccentricity tolerances for main propulsion shafting are assessed. It is concluded that many of the eccentricity tolerances specified for naval shafting are unneccessarily restrictive whereas those specified for merchant shafting are not sufficiently restrictive to ensure satisfactory performance. Cost effective criteria for establishing eccentricity tolerances for both merchant and naval shafting are presented. The alternative methods available for straightening propulsion shafting sections are evaluated. Results of controlled experiments with the "hot spot" method are presented, and both theoretical and experimental data developed with the "selective cold rolling method" are analyzed. It is concluded that the selective cold rolling method is preferred provided that the shafting can be placed in a lathe.
