MOLDED POLYETHYLENE GIVES NEW TWIST TO WIRE SPLICE

HOW DO YOU WEATHERPROOF ELECTRICAL WIRE SPLICES? WATERPROOF TAPE? WHAT ELSE? WOULD YOU BELIEVE TELESCOPING MOLDINGS? THE ECONOMICS APPEAR ALL WRONG, YET ONE COMPANY SAVED 30 MAN-HOURS PER MONTH BY GOING TO INJECTION MOLDED COVERS. THE COVERS ARE MADE IN TWO PIECES, USING A TWO- CAVITY, SIDE-GATED MOLD. THE MOUTH OF ONE HALF IS SLIGHTLY SMALLER THAN THAT OF THE OTHER, PERMITTING THE PARTS TO TELESCOPE FOR A SNUG MATING. TWO SIZES ARE AVAILABLE: 6 IN. LONG WITH A 2 IN. DIAMETER AT THE MOUTH, AND 4 IN. LONG WITH A 1-1/2 IN. DIAMETER AT THE MOUTH. WALL THICKNESS VARIES FROM 75 MILLS AT THE MOUTHS TO ABOUT 20 MILS WHERE THE COVERS HUG THE CABLE. IN USE, THE TWO SECTIONS ARE SLIPPED OVER THE WIRE ENDS, THE WIRES ARE SPLICED, AND THE SECTIONS CLOSED. ON AN AVERAGE, THE NEW COVERS TAKE ABOUT 2 MIN. LESS PER INSTALLATION THAN WOULD TAPE. THE NEW SYSTEM ALSO SIMPLIFIES CHECKING THE SPLICE, AS THE COVERS CAN BE PULLED APART AT ANY TIME, THEN REJOINED. ADDITIONAL ECONOMY STEMS FROM THE DURABILITY OF THE POLYETHYLENE COVERS. IN ONE TEST INSTALLATION, THEY ARE REPORTED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AFTER 8 YEARS.
