INFLUENCE OF SOIL CHARACTERISTICS ON DEFORMATION OF EMBEDDED FLEXIBLE PIPE CULVERTS

THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO DETERMINE IF THE MODULUS OF SOIL REACTION IS A FUNCTION OF ANY OF THE EASILY MEASURED SOIL PROPERTIES BY THE APPLICATION OF MODEL ANALYSIS. EXPERIMENTAL DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM TESTS ON A MODEL SOIL- CULVERT SYSTEM. APPLIED AND EVALUATED WAS A GIVEN FORMULA, KNOWN AS THE IOWA FORMULA, DEVISED BY M.G. SPANGLER OF IOWA STATE COLLEGE. THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR AND GRAPHICAL FORM. ONE FINDING IS THAT THE MODULUS OF SOIL REACTION FOR A FLEXIBLE CULVERT IS DEPENDENT ON THE SOIL ONLY AND MAY BE ASSUMED CONSTANT FOR ANY GIVEN SOIL.
