ACOUSTIC EMISSION IN METALS AS AN NDT TOOLS

ACOUSTIC EMISSION IS A TERM ADOPTED TO DESCRIBE THE PRESSURE WAVE (STRESS WAVE) PRODUCED IN METAL BY THE ENERGY IMPACTED AS THE METAL DEFORMS AND FRACTURES. BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DETECTED SIGNALS AND THE ACOUSTIC SIGNATURE OF METALLURGICAL EVENTS--E.G., DEFORMATION, DUCTILE FRACTURE AND BRITTLE FRACTURE--ARE DISCUSSED. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED IN THIS PAPER HAS BEEN GENERATED IN THE COURSE OF A CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TO APPLY ACOUSTIC EMISSION AS A TECHNIQUE FOR DETECTING THE FORMATION AND/OR GROWTH OF FLAWS IN REACTOR PRESSURE PIPING AND VESSELS.
