A RAPID METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF NONVOLATILE CONTENT OF LIQUID COATINGS

AVAILABLE PUBLISHED METHODS FOR DETERMINING NONVOLATILE CONTENT OF LIQUID COATINGS ARE REVIEWED. A RAPID METHOD WAS DEVELOPED AND EVALUATED. THIS METHOD MEASURES ACCURATELY A SMALL SAMPLE OF THE COATING DIRECTLY INTO A DISH WHICH IS SPREAD INTO A THIN FILM, THUS ALLOWING THE VOLATILE COMPONENTS TO EVAPORATE MORE RAPIDLY AND MORE THOROUGHLY FROM THE FILM IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. REPRODUCIBILITY OF RESULTS WITH THIS PROCEDURE IS GOOD. THE INFLUENCE OF OVEN TIME AND TEMPERATURE WAS DETERMINED. A VARIETY OF COATINGS WITH DIFFERENT SOLIDS CONTENT AND DIFFERENT VOLATILE COMPONENTS WAS STUDIED. THE SUGGESTED STANDARD CONDITIONS OF 105 C FOR THIRTY MINUTES IN THE OVEN WERE FOUND TO YIELD COMPARABLE RESULTS FOR PAINTS OF VARIOUS COMPOSITION AS COMPARED TO A STANDARD METHOD INVOLVING A MUCH LONGER PERIOD OF TIME. THIS RAPID METHOD OFFERS SIMPLICITY WITH ITS UNCOMPLICATED PROCEDURE, VERSATILITY IN BEING APPLICABLE TO VARIOUS COATINGS, AND EFFICIENCY IN THE SAVINGS OF TIME AND EFFORT.
