ACCELERATED TESTING OF FINISHES FOR RESISTANCE TO WEATHERING (A LITERATURE SURVEY)

THE PROGLEM OF SELECTING THE RIGHT COATING FOR OUTDOOR EXPOSURE AND PREDICTION OF PERFORMANCE IS DESCRIBED. THE LITERATURE SURVEY IS DIVIDED INTO SEVERAL SUBSECTIONS ACCORDING TO TEST: WEATHEROMETER, INFLUENCE OF LIGHT, OXIDATION, WATER, ETC. THE TEST MOST WIDELY USED TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF COATINGS IS THE OUTDOOR WEATHERING TEST. MEANS OF PERFORMING THIS TEST ARE DESCRIBED AND THE VARIABLES DETAILED. IF ACCELERATED WEATHERING IS DESIRED EITHER THE SUNSHINE OR XENON ARC WEATHEROMETERS ARE RECOMMENDED. PROCEDURES FOR CONDUCTING THESE TESTS ARE DESCRIBED. STRESS-STRAIN MEASUREMENTS ARE DISCUSSED AS AN AID IN PREDICTING THE ABILITY OF PAINT FILMS TO PERFORM UNDER THE ADVERSE INFLUENCE OF DEGRADING FACTORS.
