PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR BURIED PIPE

PROTECTIVE COATINGS ARE DISCUSSED THAT MAY BE APPLIED TO THE EXTERNAL SURFACE OF METAL PIPE. IN ADDITION TO THE FIBERGLASS-REINFORCED AND PAPER-WRAPPED HOT-APPLIED COLD-TAR AND ASPHALT COAT USED WHICH HAVE BEEN STANDARD FOR MANY YEARS, NEW DEVELOPMENTS FROM THE CHEMICAL END OF INDUSTRY ARE NOW AVAILABLE. THEY INCLUDE THE PRESSURE-SENSITIVE POLYVINYL AND POLYETHYLENE TAPES, THE COAL TAR PITCH-EPOXY RESINS, THE POLYVINYL, POLYETHYLENE AND POLYPROPYLENE EXTRUSIONS, AND THE EPOXY RESINS. THE FOLLOWING PROPERTIES OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS ARE DISCUSSED: (1) HIGH ADHESION, (2) TOUGHNESS, (3) GOOD ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES, (4) CHEMICAL RESISTANCE, (5) WIDE TEMPERATURE OPERATING RANGE, (6) RESISTANCE TO BACTERIA, FUNGUS AND VERMIN, (7) EASY APPLICATION FOR COATINGS TO BE APPLIED IN THE FIELD, AND (8) LONG-TERM STABILITY OF ALL PROPERTIES. THERE APPEARS TO BE A DEFINITE TREND AWAY FROM THE APPLICATION OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS IN THE FIELD DUE TO THE HIGH COST AND DIFFICULTY OF APPLICATION. COATING REQUIREMENTS SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY EXAMINED WITH THE IDEA OF OBTAINING THE MOST ECONOMICAL AND EFFICIENT COATING FOR THE PARTICULAR JOB.
