CORROSION OF MECHANICAL JOINTS IN ALUMINUM AND ALUMINUM- STEEL STRUCTURES
THE NATURE AND SERIOUSNESS OF PROBLEMS ARISING FROM POOR DESIGN OF JOINTS, CARELESS CONSTRUCTION, AND INADEQUATE PROTECTION AND MAINTENANCE MEASURES ARE DISCUSSED AND ILLUSTRATED. IT IS CONTENDED THAT THESE PROBLEMS STEM FROM THE INADEQUACY OF PUBLISHED INFORMATION. EXAMPLES ARE LARGELY CONFINED TO THE AREA OF ALUMINUM IN SHIPBUILDING BUT THE PRINCIPLES INVOLVED ARE APPLICABLE TO MOST METALS AND INDUSTRIES. ALTHOUGH ALUMINUM MARINE ALLOYS HAVE AN EXCELLENT CORROSION RESISTANCE, CORROSION PROBLEMS WITH JOINTS CONTINUE TO ARISE, ESPECIALLY WITH BIMETALLIC CONNECTIONS. ON JOINTS WHERE RIVETING OR BOLTING HAS TO BE USED, THE PROBLEM IS MOST DIFFICULT. AT THE MAIN SUPER- STRUCTURE JOINT, THE CONDITIONS ARE EXTREMELY SEVERE SO THAT ANY DEFECTS IN DESIGN ARE READILY SHOWN UP. THIS ILLUSTRATES THE NEED FOR CLOSER COOPERATION AMONG DESIGNERS, CONSTRUCTORS AND CORROSION SPECIALISTS.
