A DIGITAL COMPUTER TECHNIQUE FOR CALCULATION OF DOMINANT WAVELENGTH

A TECHNIQUE IS PRESENTED FOR PERFORMING COLORIMETRIC CALCULATIONS, INCLUDING DETERMINING EXCITATION, PURITY, USING DIGITAL DATA PROCESSING EQUIPMENT. THE GRAPHICAL PROCEDURE IS PRESENTED FOR DETERMINING THE DOMINANT WAVE LENGTHS WHICH, IN TURN, LEADS TO THE SOLUTION OF EXCITATION PURITY, AND CAN BE INACCURATE FOR FINDING COLOR CHANGES FOR VERY SMALL DIFFERENCES IN X AND Y ON A CHROMATICITY DIAGRAM. AVOIDING THE INHERENT ERRORS OF GRAPHICAL CONSTRUCTION, AND OTHER PROBLEMS, THE SOLUTION CAN BE RAPIDLY CALCULATED ON A DIGITAL COMPUTER TO AN ACCURACY WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE COLOR MEASUREMENT. AN ITERATIVE TECHNIQUE IS EMPLOYED WHICH REQUIRES THE SOLUTION OF A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS. THESE CALCULATIONS CAN BE PERFORMED VERY QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY ON THE DIGITAL COMPUTER. THE DOMINANT WAVE LENGTH IS DETERMINED IN THE PROGRAM TO THE NEAREST TENTH OF A WAVE LENGTH AND THE PURITY TO THE NEAREST TENTH OF A PERCENT.
