ZINC COATING SLOWS SLOWS CORROSION OF STEEL REINFORCING RODS

STEEL REINFORCING RODS WHICH WILL EXTEND TO LESS THAN 2 IN. FROM THE CONCRETE AND CAST STONE EXTERIOR OF THE DEPT. OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN WASHINGTON ARE ZINC COATED TO REDUCE CORROSION CAUSED BY MOISTURE. HOT DIP GALVANIZING OF MORE THAN 400 TONS OF STEEL RODS WILL PROTECT THEM FROM RUSTING WHICH COULD BLEED THROUGH TO THE SURFACE OF THE BUILDING. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE ZINC COATING ALSO CREATES A BETTER BOND BETWEEN THE CONCRETE AND REINFORCING STEEL. THIS FEATURE WILL HELP CONTROL SPALLING AND CRACKING OF THE CONCRETE BY ELIMINATING RUST BUILDUP. THE GALVANIZED REINFORCING STEEL, RANGING IN SIZE FROM 1/4 TO MORE THAN 1 IN., IS BEING PREASSEMBLED AND CAST INTO 1584 CONCRETE WALL PANELS BY THE FORMIGLI CO., BERLIN, N. J. PANELS FOR THE FIRST NINE FLOORS MEASURE 10 BY 12 FT AND WEIGH 23,500 LB EACH. THE 10 BY 17 FT PANELS FOR THE TOP FLOOR WEIGH 34,000 LB EACH. /ARTICLE/
