INNOVATIONS IN THE LAYING AND BEDDING OF PIPE
NEW MASS PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES WERE EMPLOYED IN LAYING 322 MILES OF PIPE IN THE CANADIAN RIVER PROJECT AQUEDUCT SYSTEM, IN TEXAS. COMPACTED BACKFILL METHODS FOR PIPE BEDDING PROVED UNSATISFACTORY. AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD WAS DEVELOPED WHICH CONSIDERABLY DECREASED BOTH LAYING TIME AND COSTS. THE METHOD EMPLOYED A SPECIALLY BUILT MACHINE FOR EXCAVATING A SEMI-CIRCULAR OR CRADLE-SHAPED TRENCH, CUT SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE PIPE DIAMETER. THE PIPE WAS LAID IN THE CRADLE ON NARROW SAND PADS ABOUT 2 FT FROM EACH END OF THE PIPE SECTION. THE SPACE BETWEEN THE PIPE AND THE OVERSIZE TRENCH WAS THEN PUMPED FULL OF PLASTIC SOIL-CEMENT GROUT. THE GROUT RAPIDLY SET UP AND FORMED A FIRM FOUNDATION. THE IMPROVED METHOD INCREASED THE LAYING AVERAGE FOR PIPE 54 IN. AND AND LARGER FROM 100 TO 1,000 FT PER DAY, AND COSTS WERE REDUCED BY ABOUT 30 PERCENT.
