MEASURING AND MINIMIZING THE VARIABILITY IN EVALUATING OUTDOOR EXPOSURE RESULTS

STATISTICAL EXAMINATION OF SUBJECTIVE FADE-CHALK RESULTS OBTAINED FROM REPLICATE FLORIDA EXPOSURES SHOWED THAT THE TOTAL VARIATION COULD BE FACTORED INTO THE ERROR DUE TO CHALK RATING, TO PAINT AND PANEL PREPARATION, AND TO THE WEATHER. AN OBJECTIVE METHOD OF EVALUATION USING A GLOSS- METER WAS DEVELOPED WHICH YIELDS, AMONG OTHER PARAMETERS, A GLOSS-RETENTION AND A D-VALUE. THE D-VALUE IN WEEKS IS SHOWN TO BE HIGHLY CORRELATED WITH WEEKS TO VISUAL SLIGHT FADE AND SLIGHT CHALK AND, THEREFORE, IS A MEASURE OF CHALKING. IT IS ALSO MORE REPRODUCIBLE. THE TECHNIQUE FOR PANEL PREPARATION WAS IMPROVED. THE AVERAGE D-VALUES FOR CONTROL PIGMENTS ARE TAKEN TO REPRESENT AN AVERAGE YEAR OF FLORIDA WEATHER. BY ADJUSTMENT OF TEST SAMPLE RESULTS TO THIS BASIS THE STANDARD DEVIATION OF D-VALUES IS ABOUT ONE WEEK. /AUTHOR/
