INVESTIGATION OF SOME FACTORS IN MILDEW GROWTH ON COATED SURFACES

THIS REPORT EVALUATES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SIX NONMERCURIAL TYPES OF MILDEWCIDE WHEN USED IN LATEX PAINT FORMULATIONS FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONTROLLING OR PREVENTING THE GROWTH OF MILDEW ON THE COATED SURFACE. ONE TYPE OF NON- MERCURIAL SHOWED BETTER EFFECTIVENESS THAN THE OTHER FIVE BASED ON LIMITED EXPOSURE TIME. IT ALSO COMPARED FAVORABLY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE MERCURIAL CONTROLS. SPECIAL PROCEDURES, TECHNIQUES AND LOCATIONS WERE USED BECAUSE THE COMMITTEE SOUGHT TO OBTAIN A PATTERN OF DATA AND BEHAVIOR UTILIZABLE IN THIS PRELIMINARY REPORT. THERE IS A CORRELATION OF RESULTS WHEN PROCEDURES ARE DUPLICATED IN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR PAINT FORMULATIONS. IN ADDITION, ITEMS BASED ON ZINC OXIDE PLUS A MILDEWCIDE ARE BEING SIMILARLY EVALUATED. /JPT/
