IMPACT TESTS ON PIPES BURIED UNDER ROADS

IN BRITAIN, SEWER PIPES PASSING UNDER A ROAD ARE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE BACKFILLING AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION PLUS HB TYPE LOADS UP TO 45 TONS ON A 4-WHEELED AXLE, MULTIPLIED BY AN IMPACT FACTOR OF 2-0 TO ALLOW FOR THE ADDITIONAL LOAD GENERATED BY PASSAGE OF THE VEHICLE OVER ROAD SURFACE IRREGULARITIES. MEASUREMENTS ARE REPORTED OF THE IMPACT FACTOR PRODUCED BY SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRUCKS TRAVELLING OVER A SEVERE SURFACE IRREGULARITY---A PLANK 1-3/4 IN. THICK BY 10 IN. WIDE---USING CONCRETE SEWER PIPES OF 18 IN. AND 36 IN. INTERNAL DIAMETER BURIED AT DEPTHS 4 FT. AND 9 FT. BELOW THE ROAD SURFACE. THE TESTS WERE MADE WITH VEHICLES TRAVELLING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 20 AND 30 MILES/H. AND IN ALL CASES THE IMPACT FACTOR INCREASED WITH SPEED. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE IMPACT FACTOR AND THE VEHICLE SPEED IS INDEPENDENT OF THE SIZE OF PIPE, ITS DEPTH BELOW THE ROAD SURFACE, THE TYPE OF PIPE BEDDING, AND THE MATERIAL USED TO BACKFILL THE TRENCH. THE RATE OF CHANGE OF IMPACT FACTOR WITH VEHICLE SPEED DECREASES WITH INCREASE OF WHEEL LOAD AND WITH REDUCTION OF THE TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE . /AUTHOR/
