PREFORMED ELASTOMERIC BRIDGE JOINT SEALERS

TO OUR KNOWLEDGE NEW JERSEY IS ALONE IN SPECIFYING PREFORMED ELASTOMERIC SEALERS FOR BRIDGE JOINTS AS A STANDARD. A STUDY WAS THEREFORE UNDERTAKEN TO AUGMENT THE SERIOUSLY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING THEIR PERFORMANCE AND APPLICATION. THE PREFORMED ELASTOMERIC BRIDGE JOINT SEALERS IN GENERAL AND THEIR APPLICATION IN BRIDGES IN NEW JERSEY AND ELSEWHERE ARE DISCUSSED. THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF SEALER MATERIAL AND DESIGN OF BRIDGE SEALS ARE OUTLINED. THE DEFICIENCIES OF PRESENTLY UTILIZED SEALING OF JOINTS ARE DELINEATED; QUESTIONABLE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES ARE EXPOSED AND NEW DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS OFFERED. BASED ON CONTINUOUS FIELD OBSERVATIONS AN ANALYSIS IS MADE OF PRESENT AND PROPOSED METHODS AS WELL AS THOSE OF OTHER STATES AND COUNTRIES. THE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT EVEN THOUGH THE SEALING SYSTEM PRESENTLY SHOWS SOME SIGNS OF FAILURE ( PRIMARILY DUE TO INADEQUATE CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES) THIS TYPE OF SEALER HAS POTENTIAL TO FUNCTION PROPERLY, PROVIDED THE METHODS OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION ARE REVISED TO COMPLY TO SEALER LIMITATIONS. /AUTHOR/
