METHODS FOR REDUCING CORROSION OF REINFORCING STEEL

METHODS FOR REDUCING THE CORROSION OF REINFORCING STEEL IN CONCRETE IN THE PRESENCE OF DEICING SALTS ARE EVALUATED AND DEVELOPED. AN ELECTROCHEMICAL LABORATORY STUDY WAS CONDUCTED SINCE IT WAS CONJECTURED THAT CORROSION RESULTED FROM THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT GALVANIC CELLS, AND INVESTIGATIONS WERE MADE OF CORROSION INHIBITORS TO BE ADDED TO DEICING SALTS, METALLIC AND NONMETALLIC COATINGS FOR THE REINFORCEMENT AND CATHODIC METHODS OF PROTECTION. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF METALLIC COATINGS - SACRIFICIAL AND NONSACRIFICIAL. THE SACRIFICIAL TYPE, OF WHICH GALVANIZING ON STEEL IS AN EXAMPLE, DISSOLVES IN PREFERENCE TO THE BASIC METAL AND THUS GIVES SACRIFICIAL PROTECTION EVEN IF THE COATING IS BROKEN AT SOME POINT, EXPOSING THE BASIC METAL. THE NONSACRIFICIAL TYPE OF COATING PROVIDES A BARRIER ONLY, AND IN THE EVENT OF A RUPTURE DOES NOT PROTECT THE BASIC METAL, AND OFTEN ACCELERATES CORROSION, BECAUSE THE COATING IS MORE NOBLE THAN THE STEEL. FOUR METALLIC COATINGS WERE STUDIED - COPPER, NICKEL, ZINC, AND LEAD. THE FIRST TWO ARE NONSACRIFICIAL, WHEREAS THE LAST TWO ARE OF THE SACRIFICIAL TYPE. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR PROTECTING REINFORCING STEEL FROM CORROSION INDUCED BY DEICING SALTS ARE ZINC COATING, NICKEL COATING, OR AN ASPHALT-EPOXY OR SOME SIMILAR ORGANIC COATING.
