EVALUATION OF THE ELECTROTAPE DISTANCE-MEASURING DEVICE BY THE TEXAS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT

THE TEXAS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS TO DETERMINE THE CAPABILITIES OF THE ELECTROTAPE DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING. THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE EXPERIENCE GAINED THUS FAR FROM THE PROJECT, WHICH CONCERNS USE OF THE INSTRUMENTS IN A REGULAR HIGHWAY SURVEY CREW AS A MEANS OF OBTAINING HIGH ORDER AREA CONTROL COVERAGE AND AS A TOOL IN ESTABLISHING HORIZONTAL CONTROL FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRICAL MAPPING. THE ASPECTS OF MAINTENENCE, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, ECONOMICS AND EFFICIENCY ARE DISCUSSED FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THE FIELD ENGINEER CONCRENED WITH THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAYS. /AUTHOR/
