Using Probe Vehicle Data to Generate Jam Warning Messages
This paper focuses on what a driver experiences while driving in congested traffic flow and how this driving can improve traffic safety. A method for the reconstruction of spatiotemporal traffic dynamics from probe vehicle data is suggested and studied with the aim of generating jam warning messages. This method is based on the identification of the 3 traffic phases (free flow, synchronized flow, and wide moving jam) along each of the probe vehicle's trajectories. Using empirical data and simulations in the context of 3-phase traffic theory, the authors show that with a penetration of probe vehicles in traffic flow of only around 0.5%, the application of this method enables an automatic generation of jam warning messages as well as the reconstruction of many important features of spatiotemporal congested patterns.
