ROAD CONSTRUCTION WITH PLASTIC FOAMS /IN GERMANY/

NEW METHODS OF DESIGN HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED TO KEEP MODERN ROADS FROST-PROOF. THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF HEAT INSULATION BY MEANS OF PLASTIC FOAM BOARDS, HOWEVER, CALLS FOR TESTING ALL THE FROST-PRECAUTION MEASURES HITHERTO TAKEN TO ASSESS PROFITABILITY AND TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF AREAS WITHOUT FROST-PROOF SOILS. AT THE FEDERAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION, TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND SAFETY, EXTENSIVE INVESTIGATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE INTO THE USE OF PLASTIC FOAM BOARDS AS HEAT INSULATION COURSES IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION. THE POSSIBILITY OF OBTAINING SUFFICIENT HEAT INSULATION BY MEANS OF APPROXIMATELY 3 CM OF PLASTIC FOAM BOARDS HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. SUCH COURSES MIGHT INFLUENCE THE BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AS WELL AS THE TEMPERATURES OF ROAD SURFACES AND DETRIMENTALLY AFFECT ROAD DURABILITY AND TRAFFIC SAFETY.
