HEAT-SCARIFIER FOR PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE

RESTORATION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS, AS WELL AS ROADS AND STREETS, CAN BE GREATLY IMPROVED BY THE USE OF A HEATER-SCARIFIER BEFORE OVERLAYING WITH A NEW SURFACE COURSE. HEATER-SCARIFICATION IS SIMPLY HEATING THE SURFACE OF THE PAVEMENT WITH A LARGE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND THEM LACERATING THE SURFACE TO A DEPTH OF AT LEAST THREE-QUARTERS OF AN INCH WHILE THE SURFACE IS AT APPROXIMATELY 225 TO 250 DEGREES F. SPECIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYING THIS METHOD ARE GIVEN AND THE OVERLAY PROCESS IS DESCRIBED. USE OF THE INTEGRAL REPAVING MACHINE IS DETAILED WHICH CAN REMOVE OLD PAVEMENT MATERIAL AND REPLACE IT WITHOUT HAVING TO RESTORE IT TO THE PAVEMENT, A PROCESS VALUABLE IN MAINTAINING PAVEMENT ELEVATIONS WHICH HAVE REACHED IMPOSED LIMITS.
