Cycling encouragement initiatives: using the infrastructure we've got

Raising the attractiveness and profile of cycling is essential to change attitudes and foster a supportive environment that will enable local communities to benefit from the many positive outcomes that result from embracing cycling as a way of life. A number of national education, awareness and promotion initiatives designed to encourage cycling currently exist and can be readily adopted by cities, towns, schools, communities and businesses. The tailoring of priority initiatives should be designed to encourage more cycling trips by/within specific employers, organisations, target groups or catchment areas based on a detailed local understanding. Consideration of individual local areas and communities can yield different priorities. For each priority initiative, it is important to understand the: opportunity or barrier to cycling it addresses; target audience; implementation and funding responsibility; and method for evaluating its effectiveness.
