PYROLYTIC ANALYZER DETECTS ORGANIC MATTER IN WASTEWATERS
It is shown how the organic load can be rapidly measured with a new instrument which operates on the principle of fragmentation of the organic matter by direct pyrolysis in the presence of the water. The resulting volatile organic products are then summed with a detector specific for organics. These data can be expressed as BOD through calibration. The advantage of the organic analyzer for measurement of the organic load is its capability for instantaneous or continuous data acquisition, and the absence of extensive sample preparation or pretreatment.
