THE EVALUATION OF PNEUMATIC-TIRED, SMOOTH STEEL-WHEELED AND VIBRATING ROLLERS IN COMPACTING ROAD MATERIALS

THE ASSESSMENT OF ROLLERS IN COMPACTING SUBGRADE AND PAVEMENT MATERIALS HAS BEEN A SUBJECT FOR RESEARCH BY THE AUSTRALIAN ROAD RESEARCH BOARD FOR SEVERAL YEARS. A PROJECT ON ROLLER TESTING WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AS TO THE DENSITIES AND OUTPUTS THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH THE VARIOUS TYPES OF ROAD ROLLERS, ESPECIALLY WHEN MATERIALS MAY HAVE TO BE COMPACTED AT THEIR NATURAL MOISTURE CONTENT WHICH IS FREQUENTLY, ON THE AUSTRALIAN CONTINENT, DRY OF OPTIMUM MOISTURE. THIS REPORT IS A SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS ANALYZED TO DATE ON THREE MATERIALS: SUB-BASE DOLOMITE CRUSHED ROCK, UNIFORM DUNE SAND, AND MEDIUM-HEAVY CLAY. THE TESTING IS LARGELY REVIEWED FROM THE ASPECTS OF THE TYPES OF ROLLERS AND THE SPEEDS CONSIDERED MOST SUITABLE FOR THE COMPACTION OF THE MATERIALS.
