INSERTION OF PLYETHYLENE PIPE RENEWS DAMAGED SEWER

THE DAMAGED SECTION OF THE SEWER (WHICH EXTENDED 754 FEET IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND VEERED OFF AT A 45-DEGREE ANGLE FOR AN ADDITIONAL 96 FEET) WAS LINED BY A 22- INCH POLYETHYLENE PIPE WHICH IT WAS DETERMINED WOULD PERMIT THE SAME FLOW RATE AS THE 24-INCH CONCRETE LINE. THE INSTALLATION OF THE 38-FOOT LONG PORTIONS REQUIRED THE APPLICATION OF SPECIAL TOOLS SUCH AS THE PUTT FUSION TOOL BY MEANS OF WHICH THE ENDS OF 2 SECTIONS ARE HELD TOGETHER AND TRIMMED TO A PERFECT FIT. THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE INVOLVED THREE SECTIONS OF PIPE TAILORED TO COINCIDE WITH THE DISTANCES BETWEEN MANHOLES. INSERTION WAS MADE 800 FEET DOWN GRADE FROM THE SECTION TO BE REPLACED. THE FLOW IN THE PIPE, AND A WINCH OPERATING THROUGH A MANHOLE ON THE UPGRADE OF THE RUN AIDED THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE. TO MAKE HOUSE CONNECTIONS INTO THE REPAIRED MAIN, 4-INCH POLYETHYLENE PIPE WAS INSERTED THROUGH THE OLD CONCRETE LINES WITH THE AID OF REMOTE CONNECTOR FITTINGS. DETAILS OF THE CONNECTION PROCEDURE ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS CLAIMED THAT THE TECHNIQUE DESCRIBED IS ECONOMICAL, WILL SAVE CITIZEN INCONVENIENCE, AND WILL BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST SOIL POLLUTION.
