GAS DETECTION IN VEHICLE TUNNELS
THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES NEW GAS DETECTION AND MONITORING TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED AT BRITISH SAFETY IN MINES RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT (SMRE). ALTHOUGH THE NUMBER OF GASEOUS POLLUTANTS THAT OCCUR IN MINES IS LIMITED, THE RANGE OF HAZARDS HAS MUCH IN COMMON WITH VEHICLE TUNNELS. THE TECHNIQUES ARE DESCRIBED UNDER GENERAL PRINCIPLE HEADINGS: CATALYTIC METHODS, POLAROGRAPHIC METHODS, AND SEMICONDUCTOR METHODS. THE PRINCIPLES ARE RELEVANT TO A RANGE OF POLLUTANTS AND, IN SEVERAL CASES, A SINGLE POLLUTANT MAY BE DETERMINED BY TWO OR MORE METHODS.
