SERVICE AREA MAINTENANCE ON THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY
EXPERIENCE IN THE MAINTENANCE OF 29 SERVICE AREAS (25 WITH BOTH RESTAURANT AND GAS STATION FACILITIES AND 4 AREAS WITH ONLY GAS STATIONS - ALL SERVING ONLY ONE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL) IS RECOUNTED. THE TYPES OF RESTAURANT FACILITIES ARE LISTED, AND THE CONTRACTS UNDER WHICH THE AREAS OPERATE ARE REVIEWED. A PROGRAM WAS INITIATED TO REFURBISH THE SERVICE AREAS AND TO RESTRUCTURE THE MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITY. THE REFURBISHING PROGRAM IS TABULATED AND DESCRIBED, AND SITE MAINTENANCE FUNCTIONS OF A 2 OR 3-MAN CREW ARE LISTED. STAFFING OF THE BUILDING MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL WAS INCREASED TO UPGRADE STANDARDS, AND TO MEET THE NEW WATER QUALITY STANDARDS OF THE STATE. QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING OF THESE PERSONNEL IS HIGH. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THESE PERSONNEL ARE TABULATED. A UNIQUE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM, AND THE PARTICULAR ATTENTION GIVEN TO SNOW AND ICE CONTROL IS HIGHLIGHTED.
