MAINTENANCE STATION LOCATION THROUGH OPERATIONS RESEARCH AT THE WYOMING STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT

THE PRINCIPAL MAINTENANCE COSTS BORNE BY THE WYOMING STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ARE ACCOUNTED FOR BY SNOW REMOVAL AND SURFACE MAINTENANCE. IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE REQUIRED SERVICES IN THE MOST ECONOMICAL MANNER, A STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMUM LOCATIONS FOR MAINTENANCE STATIONS. THE PROBLEM WAS REDUCED TO TWO MATHEMATICAL MODELS THAT WERE OPTIMIZED ACCORDING TO THE STANDARD TECHNIQUES OF MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING. COMPUTER PROGRAMS WERE DEVELOPED THAT CONVERT PHYSICAL PARAMETERS TO THE FORM REQUIRED BY THE SOLUTION METHODOLOGY. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY ARE REPORTED.
