A CRUSHING SUCCESS: AGGREGATE FROM CONCRETE

A CRUSHER PLANT WAS SET UP IN MINNEAPOLIS TO CONVERT DEMOLITION CONCRETE (AN INDISCRIMINATE MIX OF OIL DIRT, ASPHALT, CLAY, ROCK, CONCRETE AND WHATEVER ELSE EXISTED AT A PAVING JOB) INTO AGGREGATE. THE CRUSHED PRODUCT POSSESSED A HIGH DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY AND GENERALLY FELL WELL WITHIN PERCENTAGE LIMITS OF CLASS V (MINNESOTA) AGGREGATE. THE COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS PROVED TO BE VERY HIGH, AND THE CEMENT POWDER IN THE AGGREGATE, WHEN MOISTENED, TOGETHER WITH THE ANGULAR ROUGH PARTICLES PROVIDED AN EXTREMELY TIGHT BOND WHEN ROLLED PROPERLY. THE CRUSHED CONCRETE AGGREGATE SERVED WELL AS BACKFILL IN EXCAVATION AREAS, GRILLAGE UNDER SEWER AND WATER MAIN INSTALLATIONS, STABILIZING MATERIAL ON SOFT DUMP HAUL ROADS, AND PARKING LOT SURFACING. IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT IN THIS CASE THE REDUCTION IN DEMOLITION HAUL COSTS, OF WEAR AND TEAR ON THE TRUCKS AND OVERALL CONSTRUCTION COST ADVANTAGES WOULD MORE THAN OFFSET THE CRUSHER EXPENSES.
