OIL-SLICK ANSWER FROM IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES TANKER CLEANING AT SEA
Instead of dissolving in seawater and then working on the slick, ICIs new emulsifying agent joins the oil and forces an oil-in-water emulsion. The chemical is totally insoluable in water, and remains permanently in the oil, which is broken down into minute droplets, eventually consumed by micro-organisms near the surface, and oxidized. The United Kingdom Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has examined the emulsifier and found it to be harmless to marine life. It is recommended that the agent be sprayed on slicks in amounts varying from 10 to 50% of the estimated oil content. Possible application in oil tanker cleaning is discussed.
