STRENGTH OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES AND CONCRETE
TO DETERMINE THE STRENGTH OF LIGHWEIGHT AGGREGATES AND TO ARRIVE AT A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STRENGTHS OF CONCRETE AND ITS COMPONENTS, PARTICLES OF AGGREGATES WERE TESTED IN TENSION AND SHEAR COMPRESSION AND CYLINDERS OF MORTAR AND CONCRETE WERE TESTED IN COMPRESSION AND SPLIT CYLINDER MODE. PARTLY BASED ON THEORIES OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS, AN ANAYLTIC EXPRESSION WAS SUGGESTED WHICH SATISFACTORILY PREDICTS THE POTENTIAL STRENGTH OF AGGREGATES IN CONCRETE. A POSSIBLE USE OF THIS EXPRESSION FOR OPTIMUM MIX DESIGN OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE IS DISCUSSED. TENSION TESTS OF INDIVIDUAL PARTICLES APPEAR RELIABLE AND SIMPLE FOR QUALITY CONTROL OF AGGREGATES. /AUTHOR/
