SHEAR STRENGTH OF UNTREATED ROAD BASE AGGREGATES MEASURED BY VARIABLE LATERAL PRESSURE TRIAXIAL CELL

A VARIABLE LATERAL PRESSURE LABORATORY TRIAXIAL TEST FOR EVALUATING THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF UNBOUND ROAD BASE AGGREGATES IS DESCRIBED. WHEN ONLY ONE SPECIMEN OF MATERIAL IS TESTED, THE ANGLE OF SHEARING RESISTANCE MAY BE DETERMINED WITH RESPECT TO EFFECTIVE STRESS. TESTS USING THE VARIABLE LATERAL PRESSURE APPARATUS TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF AGGREGATES ON THEIR SHEAR STRENGTH ARE DESCRIBED. FOR FULLER GRADED AGGREGATES, THE ANGLE OF SHEARING RESISTANCE IS APPRECIABLY INCREASED AS THE SIZE OF THE LARGEST PARTICLE IS INCREASED. THE INCLUSION OF FLAKY PARTICLES IN THE MATERIAL IS NOT DETRIMENTAL TO SHEAR STRENGTH AND IN FACT TENDS TO INCREASE IT SLIGHTLY. THE ANGLE OF SHEARING RESISTANCE OF AN AGGREGATE CONTAINING ONLY 10 PERCENT PASSING THE NO. 36 B.S. SIEVE IS SHOWN TO FALL WHEN THE PLASTICITY OF THIS FRACTION IS INCREASED. COMPARISON OF THE OBSERVED PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS SUFFERED BY FOUR DIFFERENT AGGREGATE BASES SHOWS THAT MATERIALS HAVING THE HIGHEST ANGLE OF SHEARING RESISTANCE SUFFER THE LEAST DEFORMATION. /AUTHOR/
