PENETRATION RESISTANCE TEST

A METHOD OF IN-SITU STRENGTH TESTING OF CONCRETE KNOWN AS THE WINDSOR PROBE TEST, IS DESCRIBED. IN THIS TEST METHOD, THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE IS ESTIMATED FROM THE DEPTH OF PENETRATION OF A METAL ROD DRIVEN INTO THE CONCRETE BY A STANDARD CHARGE OF POWDER. THE METAL ROD ACTUALLY FRACTURES THE AGGREGATE AND COMPRESSES THE MATERIAL INTO WHICH IT IS DRIVEN. THE PRINCIPLE OF THE TEST METHOD IS THAT THE DEGREE OF PENETRATION IS INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE, THE RELATION DEPENDING ON AGGREGATE HARDNESS. CHARTS ARE AVAILABLE SHOWING CONCRETE STRENGTH AGAINST PENETRATION, FOR AGGREGATES WITH HARDNESS BETWEEN 3 AND 7 ON MOH'S SCALE. THE PENETRATION RESISTANCE TEST CAN BE CONSIDERED ALMOST NON-DESTRUCTIVE AS THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE 6.3 MM (QUARTER INCH) DIA. PROBE IS ONLY LOCAL. /TRRL/
